Localized Swelling and Pain are Common with Some Severe Instances with Allergic Reactions.

Wasps will build a cone shaped hive out of a paper like material under eaves, in shrubs and in other protected areas.  They are highly protective of their nests and will forage in the morning hours followed by spreading out and miking their presence known to any threats late in the afternoon.

Hornets follow the same pattern day to day, but their nests are encased and are larger.  The covering is grayish brown and will be found in trees most often.

Yellow jackets build their nests close to ground level or underground.  You may find them nesting within a firewood pile unattended.  These guys will try to sting you for taking a picture.  We speak from experience.  

Honeybees build large intricate castes performing different tasks for the betterment of the hive.  They can be very threatening if the hive is in danger, but if handled correctly they can be re-homed to a more suitable location.

There is little that can be done about these insects invading the exterior of your home or business in the natural state of things.  Keeping things clean and orderly within the lawn can help, but the most effective strategy is frequent activity in the areas you do not want them.
