behavior of mosquitos
Mosquitos lay their eggs in water, and they only need a capful of water to do so. There are two major groups that vary in the type of water the lay their eggs. Permanent Pool mosquitos are those found in and around bodies of water that are largely stagnant. Transient water mosquitos seek out environments that are more temporary in nature such as ground puddles, roadside ditches, drains, and areas around homes that hold rain water for extended periods of time.
Mosquitos hang out on low branches of bushes, heavily shaded trees, in heavily shaded grass, on certain wood types around homes and businesses, on the underside of window trim and door trim, patio furniture and even some garage doors.
Once an adult, female mosquitos take a blood meal before laying her eggs. These are the mosquitos that are biting us on a daily basis. They generally prefer mammals, and as I am sure you know if you are reading this, humans as well.
Environmental Management
In order to control your environment from mosquitos, there are several things you can do. To start, a well manicured lawn and plant bed will do wonders in and of itself.
Start with your foliage. Trim bushes 2-3 inches above the ground. Keep them trimmed and manicured well. The flower bed should be able to breathe. If the soil or mulch is a solid barrier, you are starving your plants and protecting bugs of all types, including mosquitos.
The lawn should provide adequate drainage during and after rain. It should be mowed regularly, protected form weeds, and occasionally heavily raked to remove thatch (a barrier of dead grass clippings that leads to a solid cover above the soil).
Check your patio furniture. While little can be done by the home owner in this regard, it is good know that mosquitos love the underside of many types of outdoor furniture materials, especially wicker.
There are some natural assistants such as citronella, however we have reports of mixed results on this approach.
