behavior of ants
Ants are social insects. They have in inherent hierarchy not dissimilar to our human societies. Multiple generations exist within a colony, and often the older ants care for the young. Foraging ants are what you will most commonly see wandering on your countertop, marching in line, or attacking you form the ground. Male reproductive ants are closest to the queen and are usually only seen close to the queen, or queens. The queen ant is responsible for the multiplication of the species and sustainment of the colony.
Ants have three body parts (up to three petioles), six legs and a pair of antennae. They range from deep seated fire ants to wood loving carpenter ants, to debris housing argentine ants. Knowing the type of ant you have is crucial to control. For example, spot treating fire ants incorrectly often will cause them to rise up somewhere else in a week or so while using a repellent insecticide on argentine ants will cause them to flee, replant their home, and often multiply into more colonies. One solution does not treat all, and good identification is the start to control.
Environmental Management
To control ants in your environment, it is important to understand what they need. Like us, they need food, water, and shelter. Stray crumbs, a spill left behind, or a sugar based beauty product are all examples of food. Ants only need a tiny amount of water to survive. Any leak, water around the sink or moisture built up in a bathroom will be enough for ants to thrive. That leaves shelter. Your home or business has plenty of that.
Keeping things neat and tidy are the start to controlling ants naturally. A well manicured lawn goes a long way to control ants and many other unwanted pests. Working flower beds on a regular basis can motivate ants to move elsewhere. Sealing cracks and gaps left from aging and cracking caulk or grout will keep ants out of areas you don't want them.
Still, even with all of this, ants can still find their way into your home, yard or business.
