Flies have four life cycles, but the two mostly seen are the adult (the fly) and the larvae (maggots).  The life cycle varies form 1 to 6 weeks which depends on environmental and developmental factors.  

Flies have sponging mouthparts, so they can only consume liquid foods.  Flies will land on and often eat any kind of decaying organic matter, including human food.  Eggs are laid in hidden spaces or within any kind of filth.  Maggots develop in animal waste or rotting or decaying fruit and vegetables most often.  

In order to control flies, cleanliness and prompt cleanup is necessary.  This includes wiping down counters, sweeping and mopping the floors, picking up crumbs when they land, taking the trash out consistently and frequently in multiple foodstuffs are present.  

Cleanliness of the lawn is important also... in other words a well manicured lawn.  Buildup of thatch just under the surface of the grass, moss in corners of the lawn along the foundation, and pooling areas that rarely dry up are all examples of areas that will harbor flies and many other pests.
