Fire Ants are very aggressive. Their bites are known for the pain and duration of pain. Fire ants are usually easy to spot as they build mounds that are up to 15" tall and 15" in diameter. Their mounds can be up to 5 feet deep!

There are a few varieties of the fire ant, the most impactful being the imported fire ant. They cause millions of dollars in damage each year to electrical systems and crops.

- Workers are ¼" - ⅛" in length

- Fire Ants are red or red and black

If you are unsure, put a stick in the mound and stand back.  Don't engage.

Fire ants are extremely aggressive, swarming anything that disturbs their nest.  They swarm over each other attacking the intruder and will start to resemble fire.  Their bite also feels like fire.  

Fire ants go through complete metamorphosis (Egg, Larvae, Pupa, and Adult).  It takes about a month for the complete process to take place.  The adults are social insects like bees and wasps.  Duties are divided amongst the various castes of adults.  

A well manicured lawn and well kept plant bed are the start to managing fire ants.  This will not completely stop them however as they are mostly underground.  A well manicured lawn, however, is generally traversed frequently discouraging the ants from moving in, and the well manicured lawn makes it easy to spot a mound as it develops.
